Nallur Kandaswamy kovil is one of the largest temple complex in the Jaffna district in Sri Lanka. Local people call it is as Nallur Murugan Kovil. Every year this temple celebrates annual festival that will last for 25 days. 2018 year annual festival had been ended recently and the 2019 year annual festival will be held from 05th of August 2019. The festival last for 24 more days from this date.
As lot of people used to come and stay here, it is highly advisable to make your hotel booking and reservations as early as possible to avoid disappointment. On the 24 the day festival is called as "Ther" (Chariot) festival and nearly 700,000 people used to stay around the temple complex and around the streets from morning till noon.
On the other days usual morning poojas and evening Poojas used to take place wherehundreds of people used to attend the pooja ceremonies and worshipping.
You can't enter the temple with footwear, Men wearing shirts and T-Shirts have to remove them prior to entering the temple.
Photography and Videography are not allowed inside of the temple.
You can visit there by travelling with government buses, private luxury buses or private vans that are operating between Jaffna and Colombo cities. Colombo to Jaffna Bus time table is not in opersation. The tickets are priced at 350/- to 1,500/- depending the seat and the mode of travel. Travel time between 7 - 11 hours. Intercity A/C train used to reach Jaffna railway station by 7 - 8 hours of operation time.
Nallur is covered by summer and rainy seasons. There is no cold or snow in this area.
Nainativu Nagapoosani Amman Temple is another popular destination in the Jaffna district. This is located in an Island called Nainativu (In Sinhala Nagadeepa). Also there is one Buddhist temple too available for you to visit. To reach this Island you must go to the Kurikattuvan Jetty in the morning. From there you can take Passenger boats to the temple island. You must return back from there before 2.00 pm as there will be no public boat service will not be availavle. Otherwise you have to pay extra payment for private boat for the return journey.
Thounds of pilgrims used to arrive here during the annual festival days. So there will be a rush for the boats and the busses transporting people to this devotional island. To go around the Island you can get a Tuk Tuk for Rs 600/- and can tour the island. It is sunny place so take caps and whirte dresses to avoid direct sun falling on your head and body.
